#PTStar for September – Uma Iyer

uiyer-sept-pt-starUma Iyer is a #PTStar for her hard-working dedication on the road to recovery, so we’re honoring her as our Patient of the Month for September.

Condition:

Uma began to experience pain in her right shoulder in April and was diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff. She then had surgery to repair the tear on April 25th where she was placed in a sling for the next 8 weeks. Uma began Physical Therapy on May 12.

Motivation:

Uma is right hand dominant which made activities of daily living difficult. This strongly motivated her to work hard during her sessions and she remained diligent with her home exercise program.

Improvements:

During the first few weeks of therapy, Uma was only allowed to perform passive exercises, then progressing to active exercises, followed by resistive exercises. In the beginning, she was unable to dress/groom, reach overhead, or even sleep on the right side. Now after weeks for therapy, she is independent with her activities of daily living.

Quote:

“I’m grateful for the staff at Jersey Physical Therapy for all their help over the past months. I never imagined that I’d be this far down the road to recovery at the start of my rehabilitation journey! I’d like to give a special mention to Avani and Geoff, whose guidance and encouragement has been a constant source of support every week.”
