#PTStar for April – Joan

For April 2016, Joan R. from the Milltown/East Brunswick office was the Jersey PT Patient of the Month and gained #PTStar status.

Condition:

After teaching her daughter how to swim last September, Joan began experiencing left shoulder pain and soreness. She had a lot of trouble with cleaning, driving, sleeping, and reaching overhead but she thought her pain would eventually go away. The discomfort continued for several months before she decided to seek physical therapy treatment at Jersey PT. Since March, Joan has attended 9 sessions of treatment for her shoulder impingement syndrome. She will be finishing up her treatment within the next few weeks and will transition to a home-based exercise program.

Motivation:

Joan comes to each physical therapy session motivated about her recovery and excited to participate in her plan of care. She is driven to regain her strength and mobility in order to spend more time with her husband and four-year- old daughter without the constant pain and aggravation she experienced for several months. Joan is excited to take her daughter to Great Adventure and enjoy the warmer weather!

Improvements:

Joan has progressed wonderfully in her recovery. She has made steady improvements in her shoulder range of motion, stability, and posture each week and has little to no pain at this time. When she does experience soreness, she has gained the knowledge and awareness to perform specific exercises that improve her symptoms. She is now able to reach up into high cabinets, sleep through the nigh, and care for her daughter without difficulty. The final phase of her rehab will focus on progressive strengthening and education in lifting mechanics to prevent re-injury.

Quote:

“Since the first call the Jersey PT, I’ve felt right at home. The woman who answered asked about my injury, when I said I had shoulder pain, she asked how long I waited before I went to the doctor. I immediately responded “You must know me, it’s been 6 months!” and we had a good laugh! Then I came in and met Kellie. She spent a lot of time with me during my evaluation, and then explained what she was seeing. It all made sense. I was always uncomfortable doing everyday things and having trouble sleeping at night. I got my home exercises after the first visit and it was so wonderful to have stretches whenever I needed them. I felt better within the first few weeks. Sleeping through the night without tossing and turning was the best outcome of all!

I’ve been with Kellie for about 6 weeks now. It’s been great and getting better everyday. I rarely do anything to aggravate my shoulder anymore, and I rely on my home exercises to keep me comfortable. The best part is that there is no more constant discomfort! I can’t thank Kellie, Nick (the aide), and the whole team at Jersey PT enough! A whole new me!”
