Jersey LiveWell started by local physical therapist to help people take control of their health, lifestyles
PLAINSBORO, NJ – In November of last year, Jersey Physical Therapy co-owner Marc Rubenstein discovered a cyst that took him on a six-month medical journey involving biopsies, tests and a feeling of general powerlessness. Eventually, the cyst was clear – good news in an otherwise disquieting journey.

“When you go through something like that, everything goes through your mind, and first and foremost for me, I thought about my family,” Rubenstein, a physical therapist for 18 years. “I need to be healthy so I can be around to provide for them in many ways.”

So he took a look at his own life and what he could change to improve his own health: diet, exercise, stress management, sleep … the works. But for Rubenstein, health and prevention has always been a journey much larger than himself, so he explored ways to include his patients and his community on this journey, as well.

This led to his founding of Jersey LiveWell, which Rubenstein developed and recently unveiled as an extension of Jersey Physical Therapy.
“This is a different way of practicing physical therapy, one that focuses more on prevention of injury or chronic disease before they happen,” he said. “The type of approach I’ll be taking with Jersey LiveWell is one that combines movement and the musculoskeletal system with an emphasis on promoting a healthy lifestyle.”

After his recent medical scare, Rubenstein shifted his professional focus to learning more about prevention and wellness. In the spring of this year, he became certified in Applied Prevention and Health Promotion Therapies (APHPT), which he said helped alter the way he looks at health care.

“It focuses on true health care, not sick care,” Rubenstein said. “It’s really about, ‘How do we keep our populations healthy?’ And we do this by focusing on lifestyle, wellness and promoting health.”

That philosophy formed the framework of Jersey LiveWell, which Rubenstein designed to help people and organizations take a more proactive approach to health and lifestyle enhancement. This is done by providing clients with programs that include a LiveWell exam, consulting sessions, education, monitoring and accountability.

“The goal is to basically have a consistent, meaningful, progressive relationship with patients, and not let that go,” Rubenstein said. “The fact is many of the chronic diseases I see in my physical therapy patients are preventable. Through the LiveWell exam and discussing the needs and goal of each client, we’ll be able to work together as a team to identify lifestyle changes that can be made to best improve their overall health.”

And depending on the level of commitment a client is willing to make, Jersey LiveWell offers four cash-based program options for individuals, as well as options for the workplace.

“Employers are spending more on healthcare every year, and it’s hitting them financially in many ways,” Rubenstein said. “I believe investing in the health of their employees is not only the right thing to do; it is a sound economic decision.”

In addition, Rubenstein will begin offering free community seminars at the Plainsboro Public Library (9 Van Doren Street, Plainsboro Township) as part of his new LiveWell Lecture Series. The first in the series, titled “Move,” will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17 from 1 to 2 p.m. and discuss the importance of staying active daily.

“In a perfect world, I’m bringing this philosophy to all members of my community, teaching them about the benefits of health, how to be healthy, and how to stay healthy,” Rubenstein said. “This is something I’m very passionate about. It really speaks to me as both a person and a health care professional.”
