10 Important Bike Safety Tips

They say that once you learn to ride a bike you never forget. However, going out for a ride is not as simple as hopping on and starting to pedal. Although bike riding is an enjoyable and fun way to get exercise, it comes with inherent risks. According to the CDC, in the year 2013 in the U.S., there were an estimated 494,000 emergency department visits due to bicycle-related injuries. Here are some tips to keep your bike rides as safe as possible:

  • Go to a local bike shop and make sure your bike is tuned and fitted properly for you.
  • Get fitted for a proper bike helmet and wear it every time you get on your bike. No exceptions!
  • Wear fluorescent clothing as it can make bicyclists visible from further away than regular clothing during the daytime.
  • Warm up first – ride at a slow pace for several minutes and then stretch.
  • Change hand position on the handlebars frequently for upper body comfort.
  • Keep a controlled but relaxed grip of the handlebars.
  • When pedaling, your knee should be slightly bent at the bottom of the pedal stroke. Avoid rocking your hips while pedaling.
  • Stay hydrated – bring water along for your ride.
  • Bring a spare pump, tube and tire repair kit. It’s best to be prepared in case you get a flat.
  • Use your bike bell to signal pedestrians and other riders on a shared path.

As the dog days of summer come to a close, and we look forward to riding in the cool weather of autumn, taking time to be proactive about bicycle safety can help keep you safe. Happy riding!
